"Small Finger" by Enik

April 29th, 2007

Maybe you’ll like this as much as I do.

Acoustic sounds, dreamy effects, and sincere, heart-wrenching vocal style, melodic songwriting… this is Enik from Munich. He’s more intense and electronic in other songs.

I first discovered him through the writing of Cry Bloxsome, probably the only modern writer I think about when I think about modern writers. Cry, from Perth, acted in a music video by Funkstorung, for a song Enik lent his vocals to.

A Morning In The Cemetery : Full Picture Story

April 23rd, 2007

Rule number 5 for writing fiction, according to the late Kurt Vonnegut, is to start as close to the end as possible..

I’m not sure if I can get closer to the end than this, considering today’s story begins in a cemetery.

But then again, this is not a piece of fiction.

Or maybe it is.

I’m not sure what it is you accept as the truth regarding life after death.

Creating Your Ideal Work Lifestyle

April 17th, 2007

I was watching notorious graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister talk about designs which make him happy.

You can watch it, too. Althought it’s not as mind-blowing as some of the other TED videos, it contains some good insights, which I will discuss in this blog post.

In that video, he shared his philosophy of work, and life. He says, he is most happy

  • thinking about ideas and content freely – with the deadline far away
  • working without interruption on a single project
  • using a wide variety of tools and techniques
  • travelling to new places
  • working on projects that matter to him
  • seeing the end results of his work

Does this resonate with what you decided as you ideal work lifestyle? Is it anything like your current work lifestyle?

Have you given much thought about your ideal work lifestyle?

Do you believe it’s achievable?

I have a lot to say when it comes to the philosophy of work. And I always use “work” and “lifestyle” in the same sentence, considering

  • many of us spend such a huge chunk of our lives at “work”.
  • we feel its impact on every aspect of our lifestyle… from where we stay, the people we meet, the way we think…

In light of this, wouldn’t it be tragic if we didn’t strive to create a work lifestyle we enjoyed? It seems to me, if we accepted work as a painful chore neccesary chore to support happiness AFTER work, we’re missing out on half the fun.

I’m not even going to start with the whole contribution to mankind bit.

But I’ll admit, creating your ideal work lifestyle may not be as easy as writing about it… but hey, it’s a start!

Here’s my list. I am most happy

  • Working with excited, passionate, capable people I can trust, admire, and learn from.
  • Solving a difficult puzzles, using my talents and ingenuity
  • Being part of something much larger than myself
  • Getting recognition from people I admire and respect
  • Getting paid loads of money (as one of many measures of value, not so much because I know what to do with money)
  • Laughing a lot in the process

I’m thankful I get a lot the above (and more to come?) from my work at MindValley. I rarely blog about my work in MindValley, coz I don’t wanna seem like I’m bragging all the time.

However, I do plan to elaborate on this some other day. Till then, if you’re anything like me, I urge you to join us for the ride.

What’s YOUR ideal work lifestyle?

BHPetrol Orange Run 9km Shocker

April 15th, 2007

After 2 weeks of trash talking, the big day arrived…

My colleagues and I at MindValley do more than run mySQL queries and AdWords campaigns… we run offline too ;P

7 of us take part in BHPetrol’s 9km Orange Run at TheCurve.

Khailee: I bought new running shorts. I’ll show them to you when you arrive at the finish line.

Mike: Michelle and I are out having drinks, but we’ll still be able to carry you to the finish line if you need help.

Dave: Get used to looking at C675 (my runner’s number)

The Results

The race is over! No-shows Talat and Vishen, they will be buying all of us dinner to make up for their embarrassment to humankind.

Dave earns bragging rights for his feat of endurance.

Even though we’re all completely tired and terribly injured from the intense competition (or in Vishen’s case, intense partying the night before), we’re already making plans for The Penang Bridge Run in later June this year.

I will redeem myself then.

For now, I’m actually kinda disappointed at myself. I’m used to feeling like an athletic breakdancing ninja, competing in sporting events, running every week etc… However, this morning, I was struggling to maintain a running pace. Worse still, I completely busted my right knee!

I’m not even going to remind myself of the octogenarians and schoolchildren who left me in the dust.

THIS IS A WAKE-UP CALL TO MY BODY

  • I realize I don’t have the stamina / horse power I used to possess
  • I am more prone to injury.
  • My mental strength / willingness to exert has decreased

I MUST NOT go down the path to ageing, poor health, and general unattractiveness!

I refuse to let elements of poor health screw up the story of my life! The last thing I want is to be imprisoned in a fragile, vulnerable, limiting shell a.k.a my body.

I guess all I can do now is write about my fury till my mutant healing powers kick in. Once I recuperate, let the training begin!

P.S – Come join us for a run? Or better yet, for your dream job! We’re hiring bloggers and programmers. More on that in a bit.

The wit involved in testicle jokes

April 6th, 2007

Have you read this news article, about a man who had the wrong testicle removed.

Trust your colleagues to alert you of these important, work-related bits.

I feel sad for the guy. Imagine having your nice healthy left testicle removed, leaving you with a potentially cancerous one (ironically, the “right” one).

The news found its way to Digg, receiving a wave of hilarious comments. Here’ I’ve compiled and paraphrased some of the best ones…

  • I’ll tell ya one thing… the guy’s a nut!
  • Now the girls will think he’s just a dick.
  • Perhaps the second attempt will get the correct one.
  • If they remove your right nut, is your left nut still your “left nut”? Or is it just “the nut”?

I think it becomes “the only nut left”

  • “That’s all he’s got ‘left’”

No, he’s not all right anymore.

I don’t even know why I’m blogging about this.

Maybe I’m accusing you of appreciating toilet humor. But this approaches toilet humor only because it involves testicles. If not, it would be all puns.

Yeah. I’m doing the world a favor by spreading funny stuff! Next thing you know I’m forwarding “cute” pictures and chain letters of good luck.

Look out for that =P
